Kayak trip down the Blue Juniata River, Newport to Amity Hall.
I especially liked coming through this chute at Iroquois Falls just below Poorman’s Spring. I wish I had a picture of one of us going through.

Bear Island kayak trip from Shell Rock Landing .
July 18, 2000

August 26, 2000

Eric, Jean and Jim kayaked from Newport to Amity Hall today. Eric clocked it at 10.4 miles.
It was a beautiful day and a beautiful trip.
We were mostly just floating along with the river and it took 5 hours.
There were several small ledges. The biggest seemed to be close to a 2-foot drop.
The place I went through was a good slot and I didn't hit bottom.
I did come to a couple real shallow places were I had to get out and walk a few feet.
Mike picked up an old ceramic insulator from the river bottom and
Jean picked up a sun bleached turtle shell.
I am glad I was able to make this trip. It was great fun.

Pa Fish and Boat Commission??!!

August 27, 2000

We are preparing for our trip to North Carolina next week. We decided today would be a good day to test the Tango, our new Mainstream kayak. We went down to my brothers house near Mount Union Pa. Bill John and Jim took a trip down the Juniata river from just below Mount Union to Newton Hamilton. This is about 7 miles. John and I road the Tango, a double sit-on-top kayak, pulling a little rubber boat behind and Bill road his small sit in kayak. We crossed numerous shallow spots were we scrapped bottom and had to get out occasionally. About two thirds of the way down we noticed we were riding a little lower in the water. After another half mile it began getting very unstable so we went in to shore and drained out the water. We got back in and shortly thereafter started to hear bubbles coming out the drain plug. We soon stared getting low in the water again and decided we definitely had a leak somewhere. When it got to unstable John got out and sat in the little tiny rubber boat with his legs hanging over. We were still about a mile from Newton Hamilton. I pulled him behind until the kayak got to full of water for me alone to be stable anymore. I turned John loose about ¼ mile above Newton Hamilton. I made down a couple hundred yards farther in a very tippy condition. Finally just above the bridge at Newton Hamilton the rear end sunk beneath the water and started sliding backwards just like the Titanic. Bill asked if I needed help, but I told him the captain must go down with his ship. I walked the last 2 hundred yards across the rocks through water varying from 1 foot to 3 feet deep. We drained the boat which was nearly half full of water. And checked the bottom. We found a split about an inch long and an eighth of an inch wide.
I guess the Mainstreams kayaks are not up to river trips. According to the boat commission Aquaterra manufactures them. I would not recommend anyone buy these for use anyplace there are rocks.

August 28, 2000 This morning I am feeling the pain from dragging the Titanic through the water.
I am trying to return this boat for a refund.
We took the Tango back to Dunham's Sporting goods and they were very nice. They said since it was beyond 30 days from purchase they would not refund our money, but they gave us a gift certificate for the full purchase price of $349.79. I guess this kayak just was not designed for river trips
